Wellington Destination Guide
Often a surprising answer in any pub trivia question that asks, “What’s the capital of New Zealand?” Wellington will also surprise you with its beauty, culinary delights and compact nature.
Coined the ‘coolest little capital’ by Lonely Planet, it only stretches two kilometres making it very accessible to explore its historic museums, taste its world-class restaurants and enjoy its stunning beaches.
Travelling golfers can find all of Wellington’s pristine golf courses on the outskirts of the city headlined by the Royal Wellington golf club.
THINGS TO DO IN WELLINGTON
Uncover the history of New Zealand at Te Papa Museum
Yes, a MUSEUM should be on top of your list when visiting Wellington. No trip to NZ’s capital is complete without popping into the incredible Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
What makes this museum so unmissable is how interactive and fun it tells the history of the country. There are exhibitions on New Zealand’s unique wildlife, amazing landscapes, Maori arts and culture and even one on their passports!
You will get to discover all the wonderful exhibits at Te Papa Museum when we travel to Wellington on our NZ North Island golf tour.
TAKE IN THE PANORAMIC VIEWS OF THE CITY
To realise just how small Wellington is head to the top of Mount Victoria or catch the 120-year-old cable car to see for yourself.
For the best views of town soar Mount Victoria either on foot (about 45 minutes) or by road. From the summit, you will enjoy stunning 360-degree views of the city, harbour and ocean to the south.
Alternatively, you can be more traditional and take the classic Wellington Cable Car. Get on at Lambton Quay and ride to the top at Kelburn lookout where you can continue to wander through the city’s botanic garden.
ENTER AN ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING WORKSHOP
When you walk through Weta Workshop, you feel like you’re walking through a film set. But not just any film set, it’s a film set in a different world.
This workshop has won multiple Academy Awards for its costuming, special effects and props on movies like The Lord of the Rings and Avatar. You can find out how the movie magic is made with a special behind the scenes tour of the studio.
Non-golfing partners will enjoy immersing themselves in the wonderful Weta Workshop while the golfers hack away at Royal Wellington on our NZ North Island golf tour.
TRY THEIR WORLD-RENOWNED COFFEE
Did you know Wellington ranks in the World’s top 8 cities for coffee? Neither did I before I wrote this. So, it is definitely worth a brew while you’re there.
You can find the perfect flat white (the speciality in Wellington) in just about any café you walk into.
