Meet the Wonderful Waterville, Ireland

Sitting in a remote location on the south-west coast of Ireland is Waterville Golf Club – one of the top true-links courses in the world. The course is a golfing gem that combines the surrounding scenery with quality holes to create a breathtaking experience that is seductive to all golfers.

THE STORY BEHIND WATERVILLE

Waterville dates back to 1889 and that makes it one of the oldest clubs in Ireland. It was a high profile 9-hole course then; famous actor Charlie Chaplin, among others, used to visit Waterville every year with his family and now has a commemorative statue at the golf club.

However, it wasn’t until Jack Mulcahy arrived to the shores of Ballinskelligs Bay in the 1960s that the links layout was brought to life. Mulcahy combined with famous course architect Eddie Hackett to create the most testing links golf experience in 1973.

“A beautiful monster – one of the golfing wonders of the world.” – Sam Snead

THE COURSE

This is a stunning links layout that is located in a spectacular coastal location. It is rated in the top 5 golf courses in Ireland and is ranked in the top 10 true-links courses in the world.

You will tee off on the first hole called “Last Easy”, which may seem ironic as it is not that easy. No two holes are the same at Waterville giving golfers a wonderful and unique experience each tee off.

The fairways are gently undulating, the front nine is played on the relatively flat ground whilst the back nine challenges golfers with a tall avenue of bunkers. The wind will play its part in your game too, therefore it is recommended that you hit low trajectory shots to play well.

“This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, it has some of the finest links holes I have ever played.” – Raymond Floyd

THE SIGNATURE HOLE

The ‘peak’ hole at Waterville is the 17th, called “Mulcahy’s Peak”. The tee is placed on the highest dune on the site, giving golfers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the course; and as you play the hole down toward the beach it only gets better. The view will certainly distract you from the challenge that lies ahead. The 17th is a par 3, but its distance feels longer than what is written… don’t be afraid to use a driver on this one.

DID YOU KNOW

Waterville is famous for its 19th hole – The Butler Arms Hotel. Since 1884, it has been the pub that many golfing royals and celebrities have chosen to unwind at, including a legendary tale involving Payne Stewart.
