US West Coast Golf Tour 2015 Diaries- Chapter 1
A couple of days gone already and packed with experiences to please the senses. Our lodgings at the Fairmont Hotel are the height of opulence and steeped in history – anybody who is anybody has stayed here at some time including several US presidents.
Our welcome dinner gave everybody a chance to mingle before we attacked Half Moon Bay golf course the following morning. A beautiful course with immaculate greens and fairways overlooking San Francisco Bay. Scores were a little low but there were valid reasons for that – a very fresh howling wind off the Pacific Ocean and playing in 4 layers. The Clam Chowder and other delicacies in the clubhouse were very welcome after the game and the delivery of a Fish & Chip snack during the round was a nice touch.
Wednesday was spent exploring San Francisco with an excellent guide, Sunny La Gardo, who was a font of knowledge and has a disposition to match her name. We saw numerous landmarks including the Presidio (ex Defence Force Base), Inspiration Park, Golden Gate Bridge, Sutra Baths, fantastic views from The Peak on a crystal clear day, the expansive National Park of S.F. and lots of fine architecture in buildings from yesteryear. Lunch at the famous Fishermans Wharf was followed by a visit to Alcatraz Island which still conjures up a feeling of dread for those who were confined there. A relaxed afternoon including a visit (and dinner for some) in the renowned “Tonga Room & Bar” was a nice way to end a good day.
Today we have travelled north to Napa Valley stopping in Sausalito on the way and we are now settling in to the sumptuous Meritage Resort ready for a spot of wine tasting this afternoon.
