Wait till you see Tralee

Tralee Golf Club in Ireland is a course designed to stimulate your senses. Legend has it that course architect Arnold Palmer created the front nine at Tralee and Mother Nature did the rest.

The Story Behind Tralee

It was legendary designer Arnold Palmer’s first endeavour into Europe and as soon as he completed the course at Tralee he said he has “never come across a piece of land so ideally suited for the building of a golf course“.

Until 1984, Tralee was nothing but a modest 9-hole course in the northwest of County Kerry. Nowadays, it is a spectacular links layout that has critics and golf professionals agreeing that this is one of the best links courses in the world.

“Tralee is the most beautiful golf course I’ve ever played… the sea and the light and the sky and the hills and the fields…. it’s just the prettiest one.” – Bill Murray

The Course

You know it’s a memorable course when each and every hole is an incredible experience.

Golf author Tom Coyne once labelled Tralee as “a tale of two nines“. Your first nine are a stretch of very strong holes that sit right on the coastline giving golfers a breathtaking view of Tralee Bay. These, however, are only preparation for the madness that comes next.

The back nine is occupied by mountainous dunes and formidable carries across gullies to flat greens. The homeward stretch is one of the finest in golf featuring an all-star cast of holes to create an unforgettable golfing experience.

“If you’re looking for an Irish course to play every day, Tralee is it.” – Golfweek

Signature Hole

Tralee’s 3rd, “The Castle”, is a par 3 that has ruins of a castle to the left behind the green and crashing waves of the Atlantic to its right.

Don’t get too mesmerised by the setting, the hole requires a bit of effort to control your tee shot over the water and away from the bunkers on either side of the green. The Atlantic wind certainly will not help your cause.

Did you know

The beach that runs behind the 1st and 2nd hole was the setting of the beach scenes in the 1970 film Ryan’s Daughter, which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Cinematography.
