The Glades Golf Club

The Glades golf club is one of the most prestigious golf resort courses in the country. It is located behind Robina Hospital, 20 minutes away from the beautiful beaches at Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach.

It is considered as one of Greg Norman’s best designs. His signature bunkering and trademark aggressive layout are brilliantly showcased at The Glades. Add to that a beautiful natural sanctuary and it makes for a visually stunning round of golf.

Norman’s work is not overlooked by course critics either. It is consistently ranked in the top half of Australia’s top 100 courses, as well as rating in the country’s top 20 public-access courses too.

THE STORY BEHIND THE GLADES

Once home to a humble, featureless dairy farm it has now transformed into a Greg Norman masterpiece.

Norman was approached to design The Glades by an ambitious Korean client armed with a hefty budget. Every feature on the course is artificial, including the nine hectares of wetlands that create an attractive wildlife sanctuary.

The course was opened in 2000 to much fanfare debuting in Golf Digest’s top 20 courses in Australia. It continues to be a “must-play” for any travelling golfer on the Gold Coast.

Stunning wetlands and lush playing surfaces will greet you upon arrival at the Glades. In fact, one of its strong features is its bentgrass greens. This makes the putting surface hard and lightning-quick, which can lead to some approach shots rolling off into cleverly placed bunkers.

Of course, the standout holes at The Glades are the ones based around the wetlands. They are visually stunning as they are challenging.

The excitement and fun begin at the enjoyable par-3 5th. It is only 120 metres from the front tees, but a challenge nonetheless. The danger lies with the extensive waste bunker down the left of the green. Have some courage and take it on without trying to bail out!

The hardest holes on both nines are the last ones. The 9th is a long par-4 spanning almost 400 metres with a huge bunker system on the left. Even if you play it right from the tees, you are forced with a 160-metre second shot (at best) uphill and into the wind.

Norman has saved his toughest hole to last. The 18th is a brutal finisher that starts from the tee as you’re faced with a dogleg left over water. Hazards will catch any mishits. If you’re any chance to end on a good score you will have to play aggressive.

THE SIGNATURE HOLE

The 17th par-3 is as good as short holes come in Australia.

It is a beautiful test that will have you play from an island tee over water to a peninsula green. It is only 140 metres from the back tee, but when the wind picks up you will need to go up a club or two.

DID YOU KNOW

To create a wetlands area, the designers used images from books as a reference to make it all look natural. This included laying logs out in the water, as well as planting them vertically.

Each tree cost around $5000, which definitely shocked the Korean client funding the design. But when they saw the end results, they embraced the idea.
