The Dramatic New South Wales Golf Club
Situated on a breathtaking landscape on the northern headland of Botany Bay is the private New South Wales Golf Club.
It is considered the best course in NSW and consistently ranks in Golf Digest’s Top 5 Courses in Australia and the Top 50 in the World.
STORY BEHIND THE NEW SOUTH WALES GOLF CLUB
In 1926, the club’s members decided to invite legendary course architect Alister MacKenzie to visit the site at La Perouse during his stay in Australia. He was so impressed with the land, he prepared a layout specially for the club. In 1928, the course was opened by the Governor-General, Baron Stonehaven.
The course has since gone through renovations and restorations by many architects including Eric Apperly and Greg Norman. However, MacKenzie’s original routing has always remained the best feature of New South Wales Golf Club.
THE NEW SOUTH WALES GOLF COURSE
The course is challenging as it is spectacular. All four par-3s face different directions, which means you won’t be able to adjust to prevailing winds from the coast.
Moreover, the rugged terrain and the fast greens does not make the golfer’s round any easier.
MacKenzie loves routing through cliff-tops – one example is Cypress Point in the USA – and he certainly has not disappointed in the 5th, 6th, 13th and 14th holes that require bold drives through doglegs and blind corners.
The par-3 6th is a memorable hole and may as well be Australia’s most photographed par-3. You will play from a rocky outcrop over the ocean to the small green that is perched just above the edge of the shoreline.
DID YOU KNOW
Despite being the standout hole on the course, the 6th hole was not originally planned by Alister MacKenzie. It is hard to believe the architect, who was responsible for golf’s most famous ocean carry on the 16th at Cypress Point, would miss the opportunity to thrill.
The hole was created by Eric Apperly who made layout changes to the course throughout the 1930s.
