The Cut golf course

The Cut

Located an hour south of Perth, The Cut golf course is a golfing masterpiece carved out along coast overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Each hole has been inspired by elements of Australia’s best course layouts, most notably NSW Golf Club which compares favourably to The Cut.

The Cut consistently ranks among Australia’s top public-access courses and has never dropped below 40th in Golf Digest’s national top 100 list.

THE STORY BEHIND THE CUT

The Cut got its name from a state government operation in the late 1980s. Scientists discovered the Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary were developing severe algal blooms, so they cut a channel to the Indian Ocean to allow regular flushing of both waterways.

Almost 20 years later, The Cut was routed over wild sand dunes formed over the last 300 million years. The course was James Wilcher’s breakthrough as an architect with his work receiving high praise soaring to 16th in Australia.

However, the club was unable to cash in on its critical acclaim due to the original developer lost first selling The Cut as a private club, then a high-end pay-to-play course. He lost the property, but since has been bought by a group of members.

From the outset you will be intimidated by the nature of the terrain with its very extravagant undulating sand dunes. However, at times, they can be played in your favour where the ball can run over a rolling dune.

The opening holes will showcase the very best of what this course has to offer. The first hole, for instance, plays up and down the dunes to an elevated green complete with the Indian Ocean in the backdrop.

From the 5th hole, the routing turns inland through the housing estate. It is a complete contrast from the first half of the front nine, with wider fairways and less undulating terrain but the quality is still there.

The challenge begins to heat up on the back nine as the course. It starts with the blind shot from the 10th tee followed by a severe incline to the elevated 11th green made all the tougher into the breeze.

The 14th is deemed the hardest on the hole with its narrow fairways and strategically placed bunkers, but the closing 18th is no walk in the park either with huge-faced sand traps plopped all the way up to an elevated green where you won’t see the pin till you reach its summit.

THE SIGNATURE HOLE

Every hole at The Cut is a signature hole, but the 12th will simply take your breath away. It will be the closest you get to the Indian Ocean with the tee box and green perched just above the beach.

First-timers are advised to take out the iron from the tee, plonk it down the fairway and it will roll to within 160 metres of the pin. Accuracy is key, play smart, not aggressive and you might get a par… if you’re lucky.

DID YOU KNOW

As you hack your way through the opening holes on the back nine, you are playing in a forest of Peppermint trees.

That may not interest many, however, the forest is one of the last of its kind in the world.
