The exclusive Australian Golf Club

The Australian Golf Club is one of the most exclusive courses in the nation. It is perfectly conditioned and visually stunning providing those lucky enough to tee-off here with a great round of golf.

Since 1904, The Australian has hosted a record 20 Australian Opens and is consistently ranked in the top 10 courses in the country.

STORY BEHIND THE AUSTRALIAN GOLF CLUB

Formed in 1882, The Australian Golf Club was originally located at Moore Park, before it was without a course between 1888-1895. From 1895-1903, the course was located in two different locations across Sydney including Waverley and Botany.

The current course in Kensington was established in 1904 by champion golfers Carneige Clark, Jock Hutchinson & Gilbert Martin. In 1926, Alister MacKenzie, responsible for Augusta in the US, redesigned the course increasing the club’s popularity.

In 1977, Kerry Packer funded another legendary course designer, Jack Nicklaus, to completely remodel the course. He transformed the links layout to the championship American parkland style the course is renowned for today.

THE AUSTRALIAN GOLF COURSE

As you could expect from a private members-only golf club, the fairways are well-manicured and the greens are firm and fast.

The course uses three of golf’s toughest challenges – length, bunkers and water. If you are looking to score well here the key is long, straight driving. For instance, the par-5s will reward you with eagle opportunities however they can easily become a nightmare if you are off your game.

The undulating landscape, elevation changes and natural cross breeze will also play a role in hampering your final score.

THE SIGNATURE HOLE

The par-4 17th has long been considered the best hole in the course. The test begins from the tee where a strong, straight drive will let you go at the pin.

Your next shot demands you to be precise in your club and shot selection as the long green is set oblique to the line of play. Your approach to the flag is made more difficult with bunkers placed either side and a lake guarding the left edge.

DID YOU KNOW

Golfers of Royal Melbourne and The Australian often debate which golf club is the oldest.

Despite The Australian Golf Club being inaugurated first in 1882 (Royal Melbourne Golf Club was founded in 1891), it did not have a course from 1888 to 1895.

Whether that constitutes as existing or not will probably never be resolved.
