THE STORY BEHIND SECRET HARBOUR GOLF LINKS

Secret Harbour golf course was designed by Aussie golfing legend Graham Marsh. It was his second design in Western Australia following his brilliant work at The Vines.

Although it took him a year to create 27 holes at The Vines, Marsh took four years to complete the full 18 at Secret Harbour. The “Links” nine was opened in 1995, while the “Dunes” nine didn’t come until 1999.

When the course eventually became whole, it was raved about by the critics with Golf Digest ranking the course 27th in Australia in its top 100 list.

Slope

Secret Harbour believes itself to be a true links course. With that in mind, you will have to allow for the wind by hitting your shots low, keeping an eye on the strategically placed bunkers, and focusing on shot selection with the undulating fairways and greens.

The course welcomes you with a strong par-5 opener. Spanning 527 metres from the black tees it sure is a monster. When you eventually get to approach the green, the advice is aim slightly left of the pin to avoid the big bunker on the right.

The closing holes of the front nine are the best on the card. It was originally the finishing holes, but the nines were swapped to quicken play. It starts at the 6th with its split fairway, then its short par-4 8th surrounded by water and ending with the hardest hole at Secret Harbour, the 9th.

On the back nine, the 13th is one of the most intimidating on the course. Unless you hit off the red tees, you will be faced with a 100-metre carry of scrubland before reaching the fairway. Don’t lose all your balls at once here.

Despite starting with a long par-5, the course ends with a reasonable par-4. The only hazard to worry about is a cluster of bunkers protecting the green from the middle to the right. All-in-all, it should give you confidence heading into the clubhouse.

THE SIGNATURE HOLE

Secret Harbour’s signature 17th is an exciting closer to your round. The par-3 offers an easy bail-out option down the left for the conservative golfer, but there’s a heart-racing risk-and-reward opportunity for the thrill-seekers.

If you are the latter, you will be tasked with a strong water carry upwards of 100 metres to the right side of the peninsular green. The elevated tee-box should give a little bit of confidence to take the challenge on.
