Sandhurst Golf Club – The Home of the PGA of Australia

The Sandhurst Golf Club is a brilliant sandbelt course that will have you coming back for more. Located 30 minutes outside of Melbourne, the course is a challenging but fair layout that is both visually stunning and superbly conditioned.

It is the official home of the PGA of Australia and has ranked as high as 70th in Australia’s top 100 courses.

THE STORY BEHIND SANDHURST

The Sandhurst Golf Club is one of the newest clubs in Victoria with the North Course opening in 2004. In 2007, the PGA of Australia moved its headquarters to the venue and along with them came a second layout, the Champions course.

Both courses were designed by 5-time British Open winner Peter Thomson and architect Ross Perrett.

SANDHURST’S CHAMPIONS COURSE

The course plays synonymously with its rugged terrain giving off a links vibe.

The most defining features are the gentle fairway contours combined with tree-lined fairways and open fronts to the greens.

Throughout the round, the golfer is challenged to choose between driving hard through strategically placed bunkers, or lay up short and face a longer approach.

THE SIGNATURE HOLE

The par-3 6th is one of the most picturesque on the course. Surrounded by large gum trees, it plays over water and can get a bit tricky if the westerly winds pick up.

No bunkers are placed around the green, instead there are many humps ready to deflect the ball in all sorts of directions.

DID YOU KNOW

Each hole is dedicated to former Australian PGA Champions as a tribute to their relevant skills and attributes. A plaque features beside every tee-box with a brief synopsis on their career.
