Rambagh Golf Club – Humble Royal Beginnings

Set in the heart of India’s fabled “Pink City of Jaipur”, the Rambagh Golf Club is one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in India with royal origins going back to the 1940s. It is today one of the nation’s best private courses.

STORY BEHIND THE RAMBAGH COURSE

The idea of having a golf course in Jaipur came from the Princess of Jaipur. Maharani Gayatri Devi requested permission from the late king to have a course laid out on the Rambagh Palace grounds.

The RGC was conceived as an 18 hole ‘Brown’ course with an egalitarian constitution to encourage local citizens to take up the sport. In 1944, the Princess inaugurated the course and was elected as the club’s lifelong Captain.

After gaining independence in the ’70s, the club struggled financially and was rescued by the Indian Government. In 1995, the course was transformed into the green grass club it is today with Bermuda grass replacing the browns.

THE RAMBAGH COURSE

Teeing off at Rambagh will have you feeling like you’ve been transported to a bygone era. You will be immersed in the history of Jaipur with Rambagh Palace, Moti Doongri and Nahargarh Forts, and Birla Planetarium all in the backdrop.

The course features immaculate fairways on traditional sandy loam soil providing a fast and firm track. The greens are small but pristine further adding to the course’s beauty.

There are a few blind shots or doglegs in the layout with the majority of holes running parallel to each other. This does not mean it is an easy course as there are over 70 bunkers and several lakes to provide daunting hazards.

SIGNATURE HOLE

The 14th hole is known to be Rambagh’s toughest. The par-5 is the longest hole on the course measuring 508 metres.

It certainly favours the big hitters with the fairway straight and narrow and only one bunker placed in the middle. The challenge is in the approach with the small green surrounded by 3 bunkers.

DID YOU KNOW

There is an interesting story circling the club. It goes that when the golf course was established the designers forgot to put a toilet on the course.

This might not have been a big deal for the male golfers, but certainly for female golfers including the Princess of Jaipur. Her Highness got one made and it still sits at the corner of the entrance gate of Rambagh Golf Club.
