Quinta Do Lago – Europe’s Best Golf Venue

Quinta do Lago in Portugal is the spearhead of international golf. The resort has been rated as Europe’s Best Golf Destination in 2015 and 2016 by the World Golf Awards.

The South course, one of three in the resort, is its crown jewel. It is currently ranked in the Top 10 courses in Portugal.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUTH COURSE

In 1972, a Portuguese property developer, Andre Jordan, had a vision of establishing a high-quality resort in Quinta do Lago. A part of that vision was to include a world-class, 27-hole golf course within the estate. By 1974, course architect William Mitchell had created just that.

Two years later, the South course (as it would be known) was chosen to host the Portuguese Open giving the resort its first golfing accolade. Quinta do Lago has since created two more courses – North and Laranjal – as well as hosted a further 7 Portuguese Opens.

The course

Mitchell introduced American-standard tees, bunkers and greens to ensure the South course was nothing but high-quality.

The layout is awe-inspiring – umbrella pines line the generous fairways, a few water features here and there as well as bold bunkering. The front nine weaves its way through the parkland, whilst the back nine curls around the lake.

There are a variety of challenges throughout the course including doglegs and strategically placed hazards. However amateur golfers should not fear for a nightmare round as the course varies in difficulty facilitating for all levels of golfers.

The signature hole

The signature hole for Quinta do Lago is the 15th. It is a beautiful par 3 that plays over a large lake toward a green that is protected by pine trees.

Hit light from the tees and you will fall into water trap, hit too heavy and you will fall into the bunker behind the green.

Did you know

Colin Montgomerie won the 1989 Portuguese Open at the South Course with 24 under par. He beat second place by 11 strokes and scored a course record 63.
