Ranked in the top 30 courses in continental Europe, the Atlântico course at Penha Longa Golf Club is both an adrenaline rush and relaxing experience.

The golf club is set in a beautiful region in Sintra that provides exquisite views of the coastal towns, Cascais and Estoril, the Atlantic ocean and Sintra Mountains.

THE STORY BEHIND THE Atlântico course

Penha Longa sits on a national nature reserve just minutes from trendy Cascais and its beaches, romantic Sintra and historic Lisbon.

Penha Longa (meaning “Long Rock”) is long on history and natural beauty. In 1355, Friar Vasco Martins chose to build his monastery there, and the palace at Penha Longa became a favourite retreat for the Portuguese royal family in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Famed course architect, Robert Trent Jones Jr designed an exceptional layout that takes into account the sloping terrain and incredible views. The course opened in 1992, and shortly after hosted the 1994 Portuguese Open and the 1999 Estoril Open.

The Atlântico course

The layout weaves up and down hills and requires fearless drives, daring approaches and crafty greens. There is excitement at every turn.

The holes range from being tight and tree-lined to open and forgiving. The 5thand 17th holes present picturesque holes due to their steep drops from elevated tees.

When the wind picks up, the course comes to life providing a real test for even the most experienced golfers. For instance, the 15th demands you to carry over water whilst striking your ball directly into the Atlantic breeze.

THE SIGNATURE HOLE

The signature 6th hole was listed in the Top 500 holes in the world by Golf Magazine.

The par 5  includes a medieval arched wall and castle tower in the backdrop. The green is beautiful and sits peacefully by the lake as it greets your approaching shots.

DID YOU KNOW

Penha Longa is known for its challenging design. In the 1999 Estoril Open, Jean-Francois Remesy won the tournament as the only player under par, breaking par by only two shots.
