The Outstanding Oitavos Dunes, Portugal
Oitavos Dunes is the only golf course in Portugal to crack Golf Magazine’s Top 100 courses in the World in 2017, ranking 55th.
THE STORY BEHIND THE COURSE
In 1920, Portuguese tourism magnate, Carlos Montez Champalimaud transformed the Estoril coast into a high-quality residential estate and tourist destination.
In 2001, renowned American architect, Arthur Hills established the estate’s first golf course. Oitavos Dunes, one of the finest natural links golf courses in the world, overlooks the Cascais Bay.
It has hosted 4 Portuguese opens and is the first course in Europe to receive Audubon Gold Certification.
The layout is a charming blend of woodland and links-type holes.
Arranged in a single, large loop that doubles back on itself in several places, the routing at Oitavos presents converging dunes, narrow valleys and some exceptional coastal outlooks. The starting and finishing areas get nearest the Atlantic Ocean, but the best views and the best holes are out in the middle of the course where the golf is half a mile from the shoreline.
Every hole flows well with strategically placed hazards and greens that are firm, quick and filled with slopes.
THE SIGNATURE HOLE
Set on the most western point of Europe, the signature 14th hole has the most stunning views out to the Atlantic.
It is a marvellous par 3 that plays over a storm ravine that continues to run along the right side of the hole. As you approach the green, we know you will be pulling out your camera before your putter.
DID YOU KNOW
Oitavos Dunes achieved the Platinum Club of the World status in 2015. This award establishes the course as one of the finest private golf clubs in the world and includes Augusta, St Andrews and Royal Melbourne, just to name a few.
