Napier Destination Guide

Napier Destination Guide

Soak up the sunshine in Napier, a charming seaside town located on the east coast in New Zealand’s Hawke’s Bay region that also boasts the least rainy days on the North Island. For golfers, it is the perfect stopover for a round at the revered Cape Kidnappers golf course, one of the best golfing experiences in the world.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll notice this place is trapped in time with its vintage cars, fashion and beautifully restored Art Deco buildings.

Not only will Napier woo you with its old school allure, but also with its excellent wine. It is one of the best wine-making regions in the country with over 70 wineries, you would be missing out big time if you don’t taste a drop of its famed vino.

THINGS TO DO IN NAPIER

Walk back in time in the Art Deco capital of the world

Discover why Napier is the Art Deco capital of the world with a stroll through its town centre taking in its 1930s architecture and charisma. Napier has not changed since 1931 when a massive earthquake shook up and destroyed most of the city.

The buildings reflect the styles of the time back in 1931 where Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission and Art Deco designs were sweeping across the United States. Some of the best places to keep an eye out for it’s the Criterion Hotel and Masonic Lodge.

However, it is not just the deco in theme, with vintage cars out on display as well as locals dressed to match the setting. For the full nostalgic experience visit in mid-February during their Art Deco Festival where everyone gets in the attire and party likes it’s 1930!

Enjoy a Cab Sav at the birthplace of wine in New Zealand

Hawke’s Bay is famous for being New Zealand’s premier wine-making region. So why not find out more by heading to the region’s – and country’s – oldest winery at Mission Estate.

The winery was founded by a group of French Missionaries in 1851 and has gone on to sell award-winning wines as well as create a admirable sustainability program. One of their best drops is their Merlot Cab Sauv which won Gold at the New World Wine Awards last year.

If you are joining us on our New Zealand North Island golf tour, you will get to indulge in a fabulous two-course lunch at Mission Estate enjoying its quality produce and excellent wines.

DIVE INTO THE NATIONAL AQUARIUM OF NEW ZEALAND

Another cool thing to do in Napier is to check out New Zealand’s national aquarium. It is home to the country’s most diverse range of animal exhibits above and below the water.

Discover the sea life from the Hawkes Bay region, the exotic species of the Pacific as well as New Zealand’s famous native land animals – the kiwi, tuatara, and little blue penguin.

One of the highlights is checking out the aquarium’s penguin enclosure where you can get up close, and even feed them!

FOLLOW THE COAST DOWN MARINE PARADE

If you’re looking for the best way to take in Napier’s incredible sea views head along the promenade at Marina Parade.

Stretching 3km along the coastline, it is an easy and enjoyable walk. Alternatively, you can hire a bike and cycle down the strip and even pull up for a swim at the beach.

The beauty of Marine Parade is that is lined with shops for your perusal and cafes to keep you refreshed. One of the best spots to drop into is Six Sisters Coffee House, which locals believe has the best coffee in the country.
