Situated on the glistening Sapphire Coast, is the charming town of Merimbula. It is the halfway point between Sydney and Melbourne, and while it is a do-able 7-hour drive from both cities, it also has its own regional airport.

So, what can you expect from this enchanting destination? Well for starters, there are over 100 beaches in the vicinity of Merimbula offering great waves for the keen surfer and tranquil waters for the leisurely swimmer.

The travelling golfer can enjoy a memorable round at Tura Beach or Pambula Merimbula, while non-golfing partners can explore the local shops or cruise out to meet the passing whale colony.

THINGS TO DO IN MERIMBULA

Spend a glorious day at the beach

Saltwater is a part of Merimbula’s DNA. Whether you prefer to lay down a towel by the beach or paddleboard on the lake, there is a white water experience for everyone.

There is no better place to beat the heat in Merimbula than its main beach. You only have to walk 150 metres from your hotel before your toes sink into the white sand. If the water is too rough, just head up north to the lake foreshore for a more gentle swim.

For the water sports enthusiasts, stand-up paddleboards are a real hit at Merimbula Lake. The water is calm and clear, and the scenery is breathtaking. You can hire a quality SUP from Mitchies Jetty conveniently located 700 metres from your hotel.

Meet the local marine life at Merimbula Aquarium

One of the main attractions at Merimbula is their beautiful aquarium. Located on the wharf, it juts out to the sea and provides spectacular sea views.

Inside the aquarium, you can get up close to a unique variety of local and tropical marine life. Try and visit on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday during their fish feeding sessions where the passionate staff share their extraordinary knowledge on the fish.

Ironically, the aquarium is also a part of a very popular seafood restaurant. They have been recognised as having the best fish and chips on the Sapphire Coast, and rest assured they don’t cook up any of the fish swimming in the aquarium.

Non-golfing partners will get to explore the aquarium and enjoy the fish-feeding session on the Friday of our Bushfire Recovery tour while the golfers are out on the course.

Spoil yourself in the shopping mecca of the Sapphire

Shop local and feel good. You won’t find the big-name brands in the humble shopping village of Merimbula, but you will find a wealth of boutique and fashion shops run by hard-working, friendly locals.

It is a similar story down at the nearby Pambula village. Another ‘must-shop’ destination, you’ll be charmed by not only the exotic and vintage collections of the speciality shops but also the 1880s façade of the place.

Merimbula’s shops run up Market street which is located over the bridge one kilometre from your hotel. Pambula’s shopping village is a little further south of your hotel, six minutes’ drive to be exact, starting where Toallo Street meets Quondola Street.

Watch the wonderful whales and dolphins

The Sapphire coast in which Merimbula is located is one of the last great marine wilderness areas in Australia. It is the point where two ocean systems meet, one from the chilly seas of Antarctica, the other from the warmer waters near the equator.

From late August to November, Humpback and Southern Right whales migrate off the coast of Merimbula. Tail flipping and fin-waving as they pass. While they come and go, there are plenty of dolphins, seals, and sea birds that call the Sapphire coast home.

It won’t be whale watching season on our Bushfire Recovery tour, but you will enjoy a coastal discovery tour and BBQ lunch cruising through the waters of Merimbula. We are sure to bump into a local pod of dolphins and bob of fur seals playing in the water.
