Magnificent Margaret River: A Delightful Surprise

Magnificent Margaret River: A Delightful Surprise

As a tour host for Go Golfing I have had the good fortune of touring the world and enjoying the best courses, attractions and cultural experiences each destination has to offer.

Culinary delights and more than a tipple of wine come standard on tour. Let me tell you, I have just hosted my first tour to Perth and Margaret River and it was bloody good!

While Margaret River is well known for its award winning wines and bountiful countryside, it had never been on my bucket list.

And, when my schedule of Go Golfing tours for the year included South Africa, Canada, Hawaii and Perth/Margaret River, the latter didn’t excite me as much as the others.

But I soon realised I had sold this destination well short and together with 27 other golfers we had a tour that rivalled the best I have been on.

From the time we arrived in Perth the weather was magnificent, the city was alive with activity and the prevailing Fremantle doctor had the Swan River abuzz with sailing boats. The pleasant surprises just kept coming.

On tour we played The Vines, which has hosted many PGA events and from the television coverage I was familiar with the course.

It was superb and fantastically conditioned. Playing links style golf at The Cut, Secret Harbour and Kennedy Bay en route to Margaret River, this region eclipses the Gold Coast and Mornington Peninsula for golfing gems.

Margaret River, once comprising of little more than struggling dairy farms, is now a cornucopia of gourmet foods, wonderful wineries, exciting international events, amazing attractions and stunning scenery.

Our cooking class at the stunning Pullman Bunker Bay where we prepared a delightful 3-course menu was a highlight even for those tough old boots who don’t normally spend time in the kitchen – ever!

Tears of laughter ended up as an ingredient in every course. Having a leading winemaker pair our dishes with premium wines was special. As was our afternoon touring the well-known wineries of the region where old fashioned country hospitality and cheese platters were welcomed by all.

Our cruise of the Swan River with more wine was a relaxing way to end the tour.

The accommodation on tour was quality throughout and ideally located for the group to explore and enjoy the local restaurants and bars.

These Go Golfing tours attract a great bunch of fun loving golf travellers keen for a good time and this tour was no exception. We ate, we drank, we danced and boy did we laugh. I can’t wait to do it all again.
