Margaret River Destination Guide

Margaret River Destination Guide

Head three hours south of Perth and you will enter the magical wine region of Margaret River. This underrated destination is rarely considered by travellers outside of WA. However, it has become a hotspot (no, not COVID-related) after Lonely Planet named it in its top 10 places to visit in the Asia-Pacific.

Although wine is the first thing that comes to most people’s minds about Margaret River, what they might not know is how amazing this place really is. From incredible beaches to untouched natural wonders, to some of the most unique attractions in the country, Margaret River will put a spell on you.

For the travelling golfer, there is something for you too with championship courses present at Dunsborough Greens and Margaret River golf club. Surely that makes this destination a must next time you’re booking a Western Australian vacation.

THINGS TO DO IN MARGARET RIVER

Sample some of Australia’s premium wines

The old saying “quality over quantity” is no truer than in Margaret River. Whilst only producing 3% of the country’s wine, the region accounts for nearly 20% of Australia’s premium wine.

There are over 90 world-class wineries to choose from, famous for their chardonnay and cabernet. The perfect trifecta is dropping into Xanadu Wines, Voyager Estate (a winery we will visit on tour) and Leeuwin Estate which are all world-renowned labels conveniently located within 5 minutes of each other.

Of course, wine aficionados would have noticed we left one label out – Vasse Felix, the crème de la crème. We will be indulging in the delights of Margaret River’s top winery with a 5-course degustation. It is one of, if not the highlight that has all travellers on tour rave about.

Discover the region’s natural wonderland

This may be controversial, but Margaret River’s scenery is just as good as its wine… if not better! Here you will see rolling vineyards sit against a backdrop of remarkable forest and bright blue ocean.

On tour, you will visit Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge where you get to wander through the enchanting Karri forest. This is Western Australia’s most visited national park, and rightfully so. The forest is untouched so all the magic you see around you is the way nature intended it to be.

Nearby you will find Cape Leeuwin lighthouse that looks out to where two great oceans meet – the Indian and Southern. Fun fact: Cape Leeuwin is the tallest mainland lighthouse in Australia!

Body bash at the beautiful beaches

Away from the forest and the vineyards, Margaret River has a world-class selection of beaches for you to enjoy.

Just outside your hotel, 600 metres away, is the beautiful Bunker Bay. It is positioned to be sheltered from the common prevailing winds and entices you to take a dip with its azure waters and fine white sand.

Other alternatives nearby include the highly-rated Eagle Bay and Meelup beaches. Meanwhile, those who are keen for a surf can enjoy the pumping waves at the internationally renowned Yallingup beach.

Wander along the longest jetty in the southern hemisphere

Located half-an-hour away from your hotel, Busselton is a peaceful seaside town known for its really long jetty. In fact, it extends 1.8 kilometres out to sea making it the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere.

Once a port used to service over 5000 vessels, Busselton Jetty nowadays is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions. From stunning murals of whales on the floorboards to an underwater observatory that lets you discover the local marine life, you wouldn’t think a jetty could be more entertaining.

On our Margaret River golf tour we’ll get to visit this heritage-listed attraction and walk along right till the end – or you can take the train to help you get there!
