Be Captivated at King Kamehameha, Hawaii

Named after the greatest king in the history of Hawaii, the King Kamehameha Golf Club will challenge you to use every club in your bag.

Set 750 feet above sea-level on the West Maui Mountains, it offers breathtaking views of Mount Haleakala and the Pacific Ocean.

THE STORY BEHIND KING KAMEHAMEHA COURSE

Legend says that King Kamehameha I was a great warrior, leader and diplomat. In 1810, it is said he was able to unite the Hawaiian Islands into one kingdom following years of battles.

Fast track to 1991, when Ted Robinson Sr was asked to create a course in the name of the Hawaiian king. He designed a layout that took into account the natural setting of the western Maui hillside.

The course was later updated by his son, Ted Robinson Jr in 2005 with a focus on core design elements: memorability, natural beauty and flexibility.

King Kamehameha Golf Club is a history lesson in Hawaiian culture and an architectural wonderland with its massive, rose-coloured, 74,000-square-foot Frank Lloyd Wright clubhouse. Inside you will find treasures that tell stories of Hawaii’s forefathers.

THE KING KAMEHAMEHA COURSE

Ranked the #1 in Hawaii by Golf Advisor in 2015, this private golf course is a solid challenge with superb conditioning and zero homes. No development is anywhere near the course, and most holes play parallel along the mountains, making for fairways that generally feature side or downhill lies.

Robinson Jr has incorporated a “golfer attacks, the designer defends” style of design. The golfer attacks from 5 different tees. The designer defends with strategically placed bunkers, spectacular water features and multi-tiered greens.

Every few holes, the sound of rushing water over black rock emerges, usually near the green, making for a scenic and intimidating approach shot. The 18th is a fitting grand finale before moving on to the 19th hole back inside.

THE SIGNATURE HOLE

The 18th hole provides a picturesque view of the clubhouse with Mount Haleakala and Ma’alaea Bay in the backdrop.

DID YOU KNOW

The clubhouse’s design at King Kamehameha is influenced by multiple designs by Frank Lloyd Wright. One of the designs was proposed for Marilyn Monroe and her husband at the time, Arthur Miller.

Since its opening in 1993, it has gained fame for its exquisite architecture with Golf Digest calling it “the coolest clubhouse in the land.”
