THE STORY BEHIND JOONDALUP GOLF RESORT

In the past, Joondalup had mainly been a limestone quarry site, however, in the 1960s, it was one of five sub-regional towns part of the Corridor Plan for Perth, intended to take the economic burden away from the capital city.

Only one man fitted the job to transform this old quarry site into a special golf club. That man was world-renowned course designer, Robert Trent Jones Jr. It was his first project in Australia and boy did he leave an impression on the local golfers.

His imagination and creative flair left Aussie golfers playing features of golf they had never seen before such as the huge putting surfaces, or extravagant bunkering. It was Trent Jones’ intention to maximise the features of the spectacular landscape and he does it so well at Joondalup.

The course is set out over three distinct loops of nine, the Quarry, Dune & Lake. The most popular combination is Quarry/Dune for its challenge, variety of holes and memorable experience.

Your score on the Quarry circuit will be determined on a trio of holes. On the 3rd and 5th, Trent Jones Jr dares you to be brave requiring a carry over the quarry. Whilst the par-4 4th winds left and right around a rock wall that, if you get caught, requires a backward escape.

The Dune nine consists of some extraordinary golf features. A sheer rock wall guards the 3rd and 4th holes, with the 3rd also presenting a split fairway for varied play. Meanwhile, the par-3 7th plays to a triple-tiered green.

Don’t disregard the Lakes nine either, the Quarry/Lake composite is ranked 79th in Australia. It is more open and undulating, almost playing like a Links layout. The par-4 2nd is a highlight playing to an island fairway surrounded by bush from the tee, an easy two-shotter to the green – if you are accurate.

THE SIGNATURE HOLE

The most notorious hole at Joondalup Golf Resort is the 3rd on the Quarry nine. It is a par-3 that requires a 128-metre carry across an abandoned quarry gorge.

Some might be confident taking it on, but when you stand on the tee it becomes visually intimidating. Anything short or to the right you can kiss goodbye, whilst a bail out inherits a cruel three-putt.

DID YOU KNOW

As you drive around the deep quarry areas of Joondalup you would immediately understand the possibly fatal consequences of driving off it.

Yet there have been instances of carts being accidentally sent flying into the depths of the quarry, even by the course staff! Each one has its own unique story that echoes off the clubhouse walls from those that remember them.
