Huntingdale – The Home of the Australian Masters

Huntingdale Golf Club is recognised as one of Australia’s most famous tournament venues. From 1979-2015, the course hosted 31 Australian Masters events and welcomed the likes of Woods, Nicklaus, and Player who have competed here.

The popular sandbelt course is still maintained in the “Masters” condition and is consistently ranked in the top 50 courses in Australia.

THE STORY BEHIND HUNTINGDALE

The origin of the Huntingale Golf Club dates back to 1896. It was known as the Surry Hills Golf Club which proposed until the outbreak of WWI. The remaining original members of the club formed the Box Hill Golf Club and then the Eastern Golf Club.

In 1938, the members jumped on land which became available at the old Melbourne Hunt Club. Famed English course architect, Charles Hugh Alison was entrusted to design the course, which curator Sam Beriman brought life to the course that was opened in 1941.

The club was fairly popular in its inaugural decades, however it rose to fame when it hosted the Australian Masters in 1979, and then consecutively until 2008. Fittingly, it held the last Australian Masters in 2015, which saw Peter Senior win for the third time.

THE HUNTINGDALE COURSE

The layout continues to be one of the finest tests of accurate ball-striking in golf.

There are over 80 sand traps that are strategically placed to catch any mishits. The tree-lined nature of the design act not only as hazards but as delightful backdrops to your round.

The large undulating greens are true and fast, and, along with the fairways, superbly conditioned year-round. However, be wary that any wayward shots to the far side of the greens will result in a lengthy and tricky putt.

THE SIGNATURE HOLE

The par-4 18th is famous for being one of the best closing holes in Australia. The 410-metre monster is a treacherous driving hole with bunkering on the left and deep scrub on the right.

Scoring par here will make you feel like a Masters Champions.

DID YOU KNOW

Course designer Charles Hugh Alison never stepped foot on the Huntingdale course. He worked entirely from models and contour plans of the location in his study in England. It was up to the curator Sam Beriman to adapt his designs to the terrain.
