Discover The Golden Age Of Athens

The best place to start your Greek Odyssey is … Athens! Well, because first of all, you’ll probably have to fly into Athens and because it is the birthplace of the iconic Acropolis – the most important ancient site in the Western world.

Greek legend has it, the powerful and glorious city of Cecropia caught the eyes of the gods of Olympus who each wanted to become the city’s patron and namesake. The two most persistent challengers were Poseidon, the god of the sea, and Athena, goddess of wisdom who each presented a gift to the city. Though Poseidon struck his trident into rock creating a gushing spring of water, the city chose Athena, who grew an olive tree. The city has since been known as Athens.

One of the most spectacular sights is Athens’ ancient citadel, The Acropolis. Crowned by the Parthenon, it stands sentinel over Athens. You can see it from almost everywhere in the city. Its monuments and sanctuaries reflect the light in the midday sun and gradually take on a honey hue as the sun sets, while at night they stand brilliantly illuminated above the city.

Should you want to get a game of golf, make your way to Costa Navarino, Greece’s home of golf.

Fly to Crete, home of the Crete Golf Club

Crete is a tapestry of splendid beaches, ancient treasures and dreamy landscapes, where locals share their traditions, wonderful cuisine and generous spirit. The island is the birthplace of the Minoans, who ruled some 4000 years ago. You’ll find evocative vestiges all over, most famously at the Palace of Knossos. You’ll also find a magnificent golf course set in an idyllic location. Designed by the golf course architect Bob Hunt in 2003, the desert 18-hole course is surrounded by a spectacular landscape of mountains.

If you’re a foodie, you will be in heaven in Crete, where ‘locavore’ is a way of life. Rural tavernas often produce their own meat, cheese, olive oil, raki and wine, and catch their own seafood. The Cretan diet is among the healthiest in the world. Pair your meal with excellent local wine, and cap it off with a fiery shot of raki. This alcoholic beverage is a grape-based pomace brandy with 40 to 65 per cent alcohol by volume. It is part of the Cretan culture in so many ways because it represents hospitality. It is typically offered as a complimentary drink in many restaurants. While it may be strong, good raki or tsikoudia is also smooth.

The best way to explore the coastal town of Heraklion is on foot. Explore the narrow streets of the historic Old Town, discovering delicious Greek treats along the way. Indulge in local seafood fresh from the Aegean Sea and satisfy your sweet tooth with traditional loukoumades, fried doughnut holes soaked in rich honey.

Catch A Sunset On The Island of Santorini

Whilst there is no golf here, the island is a must-do. One of the most loved of the Greek Islands, Santorini is known for its iconic white Cycladic houses that line its clifftops and wind down the terraced coast. The blue roofs, white stone walls, and twisting cobbled paths make for a magnificent sight… and then there are the glorious sunsets!

You can catch some fantastic sunsets in central Fira along the promenade by the Cathedral. For the quintessential sunset experience, Oia is the place to be. If you’d prefer to avoid the crowds, take a picnic to the hillside behind Oia for great views and a relaxing setting. If you’re after the cream of the crop, Old Castle will provide the most spectacular viewing.
