All You Need To Know About Golf in St Andrews

There is more to look forward to than just the Old Course when visiting St Andrews. The home of golf consists of many hidden gems that will delight every golfer. We dissect some of the courses you should play if you’re there.

New course

Opened to play in 1895, the New Course at St Andrews is the oldest ‘new course’ in the world. Although caught in the shadow of its older neighbour, the Old Course, the New course is a local’s favourite and ranks alongside the best in Scotland and 38th in the top 100 British courses according to Golf World.

The layout is similar in character to the old course and is known for its well-designed greenside and fairway bunkers as well as tough homeward holes. The most famous feature for golfers is the shared fairways and double green on the 3rd and 15th holes – a trademark for classic Scottish links courses.

However, if you had to nominate a signature hole it would be the 6th. The par 4 is very long measuring 445 yards, although this isn’t the least of your problems. The infamous St Andrews wind will play its part in making sure this is the most difficult par 4’s you will ever play.

Kittocks course

Everything about this course makes this an ideal St Andrews golfing experience for every golfer.

Kittocks one of the most challenging courses in the region, it demands golfers to have “nerves of steel” to navigate through its tough par 72. You will not only have to overcome the interesting hole designs, but also the infamous St Andrews wind which will affect your every shot.

Despite the course’s difficulty, it’s location provides breathtaking views of St Andrews Bay. The front and back sides have stunning designs, which makes it hard to pick a signature hole. For instance, the elevated 7th tee tumbles downhill toward the sea; whilst the 15th doglegs down towards the sea and has been said to have “one of the most dramatic views on the property.”

Torrance Course

The less-challenging sibling of Kittocks, the Torrance course still provides a formidable test to those who play it. Designed by former Ryder Cup winner, Sam Torrance, the course was transformed from flat farmland into a challenging links layout providing golfers with plenty of risk and reward opportunities. Conquer the first 13 and be rewarded with a sensational final stretch of holes, where the greens play right to the water’s edge.

The 17th hole is regarded by the course designer and many other players as the signature hole at Torrance. The green is protected by a stone wall and deep bunkers. Not making the green on your opening drive will be very unforgiving. If your match is still in the balance this hole presents the perfect finale to determine who is the winner.

A tip for first-time players: Steer clear of the bunkers! Strategically placed and very deep, Torrance has created bunkers that are easy to fall into, hard to get out…
