THE STORY BEHIND GLENELG GOLF CLUB

Glenelg Golf Club was opened in 1927 during what was a golden era for golf in Adelaide. The original layout was designed by Herbert “Cargie” Rymill, who pioneered golf design in South Australia in the 20s following his work with Royal Adelaide and Kooyonga.

However, his design had to be reorientated in 1947 to make way for the Adelaide Airport project. Vern Morcom of Kingston Heath was chosen to re-route the course which served the members well for the next 50 years.

In 1998, Glenelg Golf Club hired Neil Crafter and club member Bob Tuohy to undergo an extensive restoration program.

It wasn’t until 2004 that they completed the program. It included new bunkers, tee boxes, green surfaces and modified fairways and irrigation. Their work has seen Glenelg rise back to a prominent position in the country’s best courses.

Glenelg Golf Club has many unique features that you won’t experience at any other course in the country. Primarily we’re talking about its revetted-face bunkering, the first of its kind in Australia. The use of bricks to line the bunkers is very reminiscent of the famous Scottish links courses.

Yet, this is not just a links course. Tall pines line the fairway, you’re hardly going up and back on the tees, you’re hitting a full range of shots and it’s strategic off the tee.

It won’t take you long to admire this course. The 3rd is recognised as one of the best holes in the country. It is 200 metres from the back tees, but the quick fairway will allow you a chance to run the ball into the green, just make sure you don’t push it right into the sea of bunkers.

The 8th to the 13th are some of the strongest holes on the card. They route up, down and around Pine Hill. For instance, the 10th descends a ridge to a triple-tiered green, followed by the uphill par-3 11th that plays to the highest point on the course.

THE SIGNATURE HOLE

The locals love standing atop of Pine Hill on the Glenelg’s signature 12th, the course’s highest point.

Not only does it enjoy sweeping views of the city, but the downhill tee shot can help your ball run a little further. At the green, the bunker placement and natural wasteland make for a tough approach that’s tricky on the eye. Be careful!
