The Breathtaking Crete Golf Club
The Crete Golf Club is one of the most awe-inspiring courses on the Mediterranean. Located on Greece’s largest island, the championship course provides breathtaking panoramic views of both the mountains of Crete and the Aegean Sea in the distance.
STORY BEHIND THE CRETE GOLF CLUB
The process of building a course on a Greek Island is not easy. It took the negotiation skills of the club’s first president – and local lawyer – Michael Vranas to convince the government to give the project the green light.
Designer Bob Hunt has done an impressive job to lay out a USGA standard over difficult, rugged mountain terrain. The stunning, 16 million euro course was opened in 2003 and has since hosted major golfing tournaments.
CRETE GOLF COURSE
The mountain-style course is beautifully laid out with each hole designed separately and in harmony with its natural surroundings.
Despite being only 5,740 metres and offering generous landing areas, you shouldn’t underestimate its difficulty. Blind greens, deep ravines and bunkering, heavy rough and a strong ocean breeze will test you throughout your round.
Adding to the picturesque landscape is the natural olive and carob trees. They may catch your eye for their beauty however, they can also damage your score with your errant shots.
The 6th is a memorable par-3 that is intimidating as it is thrilling. From an elevated tee box, you will have to clear a deep ravine to reach the double-tiered green.
To make things more interesting there are bunkers strategically placed to catch anything short of the green.
DID YOU KNOW
Crete Golf Club was supposed to be the first of 24 courses to be created in Greece by 2005 as part of a drive to attract golf tourists.
Unfortunately, the project never eventuated and there continue to be only seven 18-hole courses in the country.
