These Chinese Treasures Are Must-Do’s When Travelling

One of the most globally-adored native animals, an underground army of terracotta warriors, and a forest full of stone towers are must-do’s when you’re looking at visiting China. When you travel on Go Golfing’s golf tour to China, you can both play magnificent golf and tick those Chinese treasures off.

Giant Pandas

The cherished Chinese native, the Giant Panda, lives in the mountains and bamboo forests of southwest China. The panda has a quiet existence as its life majorly consists of eating, sleeping, and climbing trees. An adult needs to eat 12 to 38 kilograms of bamboo each day to obtain the energy it requires as this source of food has very little nutritional value yet it constitutes 99% of the Giant Panda’s diet.

This species is considered a national treasure in China and was endangered until 2015. Today the Giant Panda is considered vulnerable thanks to the implementation of panda bases, natural reserves, and careful breeding programs. The Go Golfing China Tour visits the Chengdu Panda Base where you can walk through and watch adult and young pandas eating and playing surrounded by lush bamboo, or watch mother pandas nurse their cubs in the nursery… but if you just can’t wait to see these beautiful bears, you can watch them live 24/7 on the Panda Cam.

Terracotta Warriors

Imagine the surprise of the Chinese peasant who, while digging a well in 1974, stumbled upon a vault filled with 6,000 life-size terracotta soldiers and horses arranged in a strict formation of 38 columns, 16 feet deep. A second vault contained another 1,000 soldiers and 500 horses while a third one featured an exquisitely detailed war chariot. Their distinct features and expressions make each warrior completely unique, from the armour they wear to the shape of their ears, no two figures are alike. As they stand silently in precise military formation according to rank and duty, most carry weapons ready for battle…

The Terracotta Warriors is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. The underground army of Emperor Qin has silently stood guard over the tomb of China’s first emperor for more than two millennia. The Terracotta Warriors were made in preparation for Qin’s journey into the afterlife and were intended to protect him after death. The life-sized statues were handcrafted by local artists and were painted brilliant colours; however, time has worn away the paint and all we see today is the dusty brown of terracotta – though this does not diminish the striking vision of the historical figures.

Stone Forest

This is an ancient forest in southern China where thousands of limestone rock formations toward upward with sheer majesty. Trees dot the stone terrain, adding bursts of greenery to an overall grey landscape. China’s Stone Forest remains one of the country’s most visited locations–and it’s not hard to see why.

Believed to be over 270 million years old, the stunning formation, also known as Shilin, was caused by the erosion of limestone. This breath-taking location is divided into smaller stone forests and also features other natural beauties including waterfalls, ponds, caves, an island in the middle of a lake, and an underground river.
