The Magnificent Kapalua’s Bay Course, Hawaii

Ever dreamt of teeing off over a cove on a tropical island? Dreams really do come true at Kapalua Golf’s Bay Course with lush greens, incredible ocean views and an unmissable signature hole. Discover one of the best courses Maui has to offer…

The Story Behind Kapalua’s Bay Course

Opened in 1975, the award-winning Bay Course is an unmissable golfing experience. It meanders around historic buildings and tropical gardens to the coastline. It’s a course that has a place on every golfer’s must-play list, and many greats have already checked it off. A championship course, The Bay has hosted many top players over the years and saw Greg Norman’s first win on American soil.

In 2018, The Bay Course underwent a number of improvements to improve pace of play and create a memorable and challenging final stretch of holes. The new first hole is the former 7th hole – an uphill 355-yard par 4 that will get golfers off to a good start. The new 16th and 17th holes (formerly holes 4 and 5) play along and over the ocean, with the par-3 17th hole Maui’s only over-the-ocean par 3. The new 18th hole (formerly the 6th hole) is a challenging, and intriguing uphill par 5.

The Course

Not to be put in the shadow of Kapalua’s Plantation Course, the Bay Course offers a spectacular round with picturesque surroundings, conditioning, and strategic bunkering. The Bay Course is built around Oneloa Bay and boasts fabulous views of the Pacific, specifically on the signature hole – the only hole on the island to play over the ocean.

Positioned right on the coast, watch out for the sea breeze. Select holes are heavily tree-lined, placing high importance on accuracy. Also to note, the last nine holes are longer and more challenging than the first nine – which are quite short.

“Kapalua Resort’s championship ocean course characteristics: rolling, hilly terrain through resort and to ocean; 68 bunkers total; 8 water hazards total; picturesque 17th hole has golfers at the edge of the Pacific.” – Go Hawaii

Signature Hole

Kapalua’s Bay course 17th hole is not to be missed. This is the only hole to play over the ocean on the island of Maui. It is one of the most breathtaking shots. Don’t let its beauty fool you, it is also challenging. Tee off over the crystal clear cove, about 140 metres away from the putting green. You might see, as your ball soars toward the hole, sea turtles glide over coral reefs below.

Did you know?

The course hosted Greg Norman’s first win on American soil. It also hosted the World Cup of Golf in 1987 with Wales winning the Cup thanks to Ian Woosnam and David Llewellyn. Two of the most popular PGA players ever, Fred Couples and Davis Love III, have each earned victories here – twice.
