Gold Coast hosts 15th anniversary World Masters Golf
The Mitsubishi Motors World Masters Golf Championship, organised by Gold Coast company, Go Golfing, will celebrate its 15th anniversary on the Gold Coast from 24 to 30 October 2010.
Over 950 visitors from across Australia and around the world will arrive on the Gold Coast for a week full of golf and social events. It is estimated that this event injects approximately $2.4 million in direct economic benefit to the Gold Coast, with competitors staying an average of 8.2 room nights booked.
Peter McCarthy, tournament founder and managing director of Go Golfing recalls 15 years ago when he organized the first Mitsubishi Masters tournament, “I was just 23, and working out of a makeshift office in my parent’s home.”
“Having Mitsubishi Motors come on board as naming sponsor breathed life into the concept and this relationship has gone on to become Mitsubishi Motors longest running sponsorship association,” said McCarthy.
“My parents were my first employees, and 15 years later, together with a dedicated team, we have transformed the Mitsubishi Masters to become the biggest and most prestigious event for amateur golfers in the Southern Hemisphere.” Dennis Chidlow, a local Queensland golfer, has attended all 15 Mitsubishi Masters, since it began in 1995.
“I just love teeing up on the first round, and re-meeting all the guys that I have played with in earlier Mitsubishi Masters,” Chidlow comments. “It’s an experience that money can’t buy.” To this day, Chidlow still wears his first ever tournament shirt for the opening round at the Mitsubishi Masters.
All golfers must be over the age of 35, and will play in divisions according to their age and handicap.
There are over $120,000 worth of lucky draw and individual golf prizes to be won, which includes a brand new Mitsubishi Lancer. In addition, the event has raised $140,000 for the Cancer Council Australia.
Golfers will be playing rounds at four Gold Coast courses, The Colonial, Glades, Lakelands and Royal Pines Resort. Various venues in the Broadbeach precinct will host nightly social events, including a poolside cocktail party, rock n roll night and gala presentation dinner.
On Wednesday 27 October, Mitsubishi Motors will be hosting a Sportsman’s Lunch at The Envy Hotel in Broadbeach for Mitsubishi owners playing in the tournament. Hosted by Chris ‘Buddha’ Handy, special guests include Mat Rogers, former test cricketer Gary Cosier and players from the Gold Coast Suns and Gold Coast Blaze.
Locals can also get in on the event prizes simply by shopping at The Oasis Shopping Centre. Just spend $50 in-store to go in the draw for a $5,000 holiday for two to New Zealand. This promotion runs from 23 to 30 October.
