MAY 2009 - Press Release

WHILE numbers for most amateur tournaments are flagging, Go Golfing’s 4-Ball tournaments are bucking the trend with sell-out events in Australia and abroad. An award-winning formula of exotic destinations, luxury accommodation, stunning golf courses, an exciting 4-Ball format and fostering friendship through an entertaining social program has golfers lining up for more.

While Go Golfing is well known for hosting Australia’s biggest tournaments such as the Mitsubishi World Masters on the Gold Coast and Wrest Point International Masters in Hobart, it seems the 4-Ball events fill a niche in the golf event scene.

A quick peruse of the Go Golfing website confirms a 4-Ball tournament was hosted in Queenstown NZ in March and events are coming up on the Gold Coast in July, Malaysia in September and Fiji in November.

Event manager Simon Russ states that demand will see Go Golfing add the Hunter Valley and Perth to the 4-Ball schedule for 2010. “For the 4-Ball tournaments we limit entries to 120,” Russ said. “These smaller events (compared to the Masters) promote great fun and social interaction.

“By the end of the welcome dinner you know most of the people and there is a good vibe, embracing the local culture, attractions and experiences ensure the bonds formed become enduring friendships.”

Golfer Pacific caught up with regular 4-Ball participants Les and Suzan from Tallwoods on the New South Wales central north coast to share their experiences.

What events have you been to?

We have previously played the 4-Ball tournaments at Rydges Capricorn, Fiji and Malaysia. This year we went to New Zealand and are looking forward to the Radisson 4-Ball on the Gold Coast and we have booked to return to Malaysia.

You’re returning to Malaysia, what’s the appeal?

The service is out of this world. There’s hundreds of staff and they are always smiling and very attentive. The caddies ensured my clubs and shoes have never been cleaner. Course staff measure distances of all players hitting the par three’s so there is no challenge over the NTP winner. The 27-hole layout is world class with signature holes overlooking the ocean and township.

The theme and set-up for the welcome and presentation dinners was unlike anything I have seen. Voted best tribal dance in the world, the ‘Dance of the Headhunters’ was captivating while the Rock ‘n Roll spectacular ended with the dance floor full . . . and I can’t even dance. I probably stayed a little too long at the poolside happy hours. This will be a great 60th Birthday Party for us both!

What about the 4-Ball format?

Suzan and I just love the competition as it starts with an ambrose which is good while you get to know the course, then two rounds of better ball before the aggregate on the final day where every shot counts. There are divisions for men, ladies and mixed teams, so it is all very fair.

Away from the golf, what else do you rate?

With Go Golfing everything is arranged to the minute. Prior to going away their communications cover off on everything you need to know and their travel tips are fantastic for the inexperienced traveller. It is relaxing knowing that everything has been arranged for you, but we also have some free time as well. Their event team is so welcoming that even the first timers feel right at home.

Go Golfing also research the destinations and hook us up with some amazing experiences. Dining under the stars, Orang Utang tour, jetboating, night markets are just some of the experiences, especially participating in the cultural shows in Malaysia and Fiji.

What about the value?

We’re fixed income retirees and couldn’t afford to do the events unless they were well priced. The packages always include all your breakfasts, dinner and drinks are included at the functions, so you rarely have to put your hand in your pocket. Go Golfing tend to offer destinations where the Aussie dollar is buying well, so that is a bonus which ensures Suzan comes back with a heap of souvenirs for the grandkids.

Camaraderie and friendship seem a common theme?

Most of the participants are 50-65 and so there tend to be common interests, beyond golf. Simple things like name badges, noting where people are from, are great conversation starters. You always make friends and we keep in touch and arrange to meet again at other events. We know about 20 playing the Radisson 4-Ball.

Any advice for first timers?

Sign up. They sell out so it is not just us that think they are great value. You will take away memories and friendships that you will cherish forever. Prizes are a bonus.
