ATTENTION GOLF JUNKIES: if it’s not already, put Cape Kidnappers, the Tom Doak-designed oceanside course, at the top of your “must-play” list. If you don’t take our word for it, read on. Travel and Leisure Golf Magazine named it Course of the Year, heralding it the “new eighth wonder of the golf world.” Meanwhile, The Golf Insider newsletter called Cape Kidnapper’s “extraordinary.....There are no weak holes, and this consistency puts it in a league with the world’s best.” .
Why all the hoopla? Picture this. The minimalist-style course, built on an old sheep farm, runs along the sparkling Pacific Ocean, perched on 500-foot serrated cliffs. On some holes, you feel as though you’re hitting the ball into “oblivion” – as one of the holes is named – because it’s hard to tell where the sky starts and the ocean ends. On others, you’ll feel like you’re still on a sheep farm, climbing up rustic wood stairs to a perch, where you can’t help but pause to take in the dramatic, panoramic views.
